Nigel’s career began behind the camera, driven by a deep commitment to documenting human struggle. This work took him across Africa and Asia, covering conflict zones, humanitarian crises and communities living under extreme pressure. As a photojournalist, he was motivated by the belief that bearing witness mattered – that telling these stories could build understanding and accountability.

In 2008, while reporting on the humanitarian emergency outside Mogadishu, Somalia, Nigel and a fellow journalist were kidnapped by a militia group.

He spent 460 days in captivity, enduring deprivation, psychological torment, physical abuse and profound uncertainty. His release in late 2009 attracted international attention and later formed the basis of his bestselling memoir, The Price of Life, an unflinching account of survival and the complex realities of hostage negotiation.

Nigel’s Story

Nigel’s journey has also shaped his work as a Psychotherapist, supporting individuals navigating trauma, anxiety and complex stress responses, particularly following high-risk or destabilising experiences. Having personally endured extreme psychological pressure, he brings uncommon empathy, authenticity and calm to the therapeutic space, helping people rebuild a sense of safety, agency and meaning.

Alongside this, Nigel works as an international risk and crisis-management consultant, advising NGOs, media organisations, governments and corporations on kidnapping response, field safety, risk preparation and decision-making under pressure.

His consulting and training blend technical expertise with lived experience, offering practical, credible guidance for organisations operating in volatile environments.

Across all areas of his work, Nigel’s focus remains unwavering: helping individuals and organisations better understand risk, navigate adversity and build the resilience needed to move through challenges with clarity, confidence and courage.

Emerging from this experience, Nigel made a conscious decision to transform trauma into something purposeful.

Today, he draws on his lived experience to speak internationally on resilience, mental health, crisis decision-making and the psychology of survival. His keynote presentations, workshops and training sessions are grounded, compassionate and deeply human, offering audiences practical insights into courage, recovery and adaptability. His openness about vulnerability and long-term psychological impact has made him a respected voice on post-traumatic growth.
